It is an early spring at Warm Springs Ranch and it was time to open the Ranch and get out on the water fishing!

With perfect spring conditions on Ruth Lake, it still took us a couple of days of hard fishing to finally find the fish! With the lake just beginning it’s “turnover” finding them was not easy. CLICK HERE! to read more about the April Fishing Report!
So great to see our new friend Lola, a Pyrenees/Coonhound cross from Ruth Lake Lodge! She is not even one year old, is ginormas, has a great gentle mindset and had a blast playing with Diego!
SEASON’s GREETINGS from TEAA and RGT! We hope that all is well with you and those around you. Please take time to read our 2014 Holiday Update! 2014 has been a busy and eventful year! We think of each and everyone of you often and hope you enjoy catching up with us and our families. Here’s wishing you and your clan –
ALL the VERY BEST in 2015!
Mid to late October signals the end of summer for the Ranch and the cold, blustery wind reminded us that winter is soon on it’s way! It is also a great time to fish large rainbows in what we call the “Rhubarb Patch” just in front of the Ranch. The “rhubarb” is infact water lilies and the rainbows seem to congregate in them, looking for food before the ice covers the lake.
At this time of year the rainbows are very aggressive and a leech pattern drives them nuts! What a blast it is watching them torpedo your hook from out of the “rhubarb”. This years windy conditions and overcast sky made it difficult to spot them but we still managed to bring a few into the boat. Make note that our 2015 plans will be a few weeks earlier for this trip.
Although the weather was not perfect we really enjoyed the evening and day and a half we were able to spend with Stefano and Caitlyn. Between them balancing their busy schedule with Stefano in med school and getting ready for their first child (mid January 2015) they were happy to fish and hang out at the Ranch relaxing and enjoying the tranquility it brings.
Our final day, it was time to prepare the Ranch for the winter. A busy four hours, draining all the pipes and filling them with anti-freeze, pulling the boats up and into winter storage, leaving with fond memories of a successful and enjoyable 2014 and looking forward already to Spring of 2015!
This past month, family members gathered at the Ranch to pay tribute to the patirarch of the Tolhurst Clan, the “Captain” who passed away on February 12th of this year after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

Winter was officially over and it was time to open up the Ranch for the 2014 season! What a shock we had on arrival when we found our boardwalk 6 inches under water! Our neighbours tell us that the water level at Ruth Lake is the highest it has been for at least 40 years, and indeed it was high.
So a few relaxing days of fishing and doing odds and ends turned into a full assault on raising the level of the boardwalk! Two full days of blood sweat and tears, 56 pounded posts and extremely sore shoulders = dry feet for the future. Hooray!!!!
Thanks to the work team of TEAA, Rum and myself we were able to raise the boardwalk 12 to 14 inches. Hopefully that should do it for future high waters.
We did get out on the water to do some fishing. Current standings in the 2014 Warm Springs Ranch Fisherman of the Year are as follows;
1ST Place – RGT with a 2.5 lb Rainbow
2nd Place – TEAA with a 1 lb Rainbow
All in all, though fishing was slow, we lost a few, including a big one which broke Tracy’s line and took her new Shellie hook! Chronomids were hatching everywhere and we did give it a try and had a couple of bites – a technique that I will definitely work at improving and learning – the art of chronomid fishing.
What a beautiful bird! We had a visit from a couple of Western Tanagers at the Ranch! First time we have seen them there. So much colour!
The Sandhill Crane is a regular at the Ranch. Infact they will often nest on our property. Very exciting to see a flock of them flying over and it is quite incredible the noise they can make!
