Mid to late October signals the end of summer for the Ranch and the cold, blustery wind reminded us that winter is soon on it’s way! It is also a great time to fish large rainbows in what we call the “Rhubarb Patch” just in front of the Ranch. The “rhubarb” is infact water lilies and the rainbows seem to congregate in them, looking for food before the ice covers the lake.
At this time of year the rainbows are very aggressive and a leech pattern drives them nuts! What a blast it is watching them torpedo your hook from out of the “rhubarb”. This years windy conditions and overcast sky made it difficult to spot them but we still managed to bring a few into the boat. Make note that our 2015 plans will be a few weeks earlier for this trip.
Although the weather was not perfect we really enjoyed the evening and day and a half we were able to spend with Stefano and Caitlyn. Between them balancing their busy schedule with Stefano in med school and getting ready for their first child (mid January 2015) they were happy to fish and hang out at the Ranch relaxing and enjoying the tranquility it brings.
Our final day, it was time to prepare the Ranch for the winter. A busy four hours, draining all the pipes and filling them with anti-freeze, pulling the boats up and into winter storage, leaving with fond memories of a successful and enjoyable 2014 and looking forward already to Spring of 2015!
